Room 308, Tuesday evening

Hermione could panic about not having classes or being bored, but she kind of chose not to. Because she could always practice some Transfiguration and it was just like learning. She'd managed to turn a hat into a kitten so far, which Crookshanks was less than happy with.

"Don't start, he'll be changed back before you know it," Hermione told him.

Crookshanks ignored her, and curled up on the floor, glaring at it.

Rikku had a cell phone! This was seriously cool and meant she could pester her roommate. Okay, and she was seriously worried about the whole, Hermione got sent to the crazy lady's office on Friday, but she didn't want to borrow Jude's parents' phone, because ... yeah. Jude's parents.

But a cell phone was totally different. Ring!

Keeping the kitten in her arms just in case Crookshanks decided to take the fight to it, Hermione picked up. "Hello?"

"Hermione!" Rikku bounced. "Hi! Hey! It's Rikku! What's up! I have a cell phone! It doesn't have a cord or anything! How are you!??"

Rikku: Still easily amused.

"I'm all right," she said, smiling as she could about hear all the punctuation. "And congratulations on the phone!"

"Thank you!" Rikku bounced again. "They were all 'you don't have a cell? You totally need one' and Caitlin picked one out for me and it was bright pink and I was all 'uh, that's really not my deal?' and so Nikki swiped it and scribbled on it a lot and then Jen was all 'you guys, stop it' and got me a new faceplate and I got to pick it out so it's all funky and orange."

She stopped for a quick breath. "I met Jude's friends!" she added, to fill her quotient of Completely Obvious Statements.

"I was going to ask who you were talking about," Hermione giggled. "So you're having fun, then?"

"Totally!" Rikku laughed. "Oh! Yeah! Jude's friends, we were all at the mall, and I met his parents and --" Her voice dropped. "-- I don't think they like me very much 'cause I'm all weird and hyper? He totally should have lied and said he's going out with someone not-me. Like you. 'Cause you'd be a way-impressive girlfriend with all the 'I study a lot' and 'I'm from England, which is a real place' and you can talk to people without sounding like a complete idiot."

Rikku's approximation of Hermione's accent was ... less than accurate.

"But we had curbjam! And Jude totally kicked ass and it was the best thing ever and I got to meet Mike Dint who sucks and there's a store here in Toronto that just has piles and piles of broken machina and we shopped there for hours. Well, I did? Jude kinda hung out and was all 'have fun, bra.'"

Rikku also failed at sounding like Jude.

"I'm sure they like you just fine," Hermione assured her, taking a seat in the chair as the kitten tried to dig tiny claws into her thigh. "...Who's Mike Dint?"

"Some skateboaring guy who's a total jerk," Rikku said, rolling her eyes. "Jude totally hates him, and Jude never hates anybody. I mean, you've really gotta be trying for that, you know? Last year I guess Jude got his board from winning and he totally used that to make my board and so he was all 'oh, yeah, well, I'll get you this year' and that soooooo didn't happen. What a loser."

Rikku tucked her legs under her. "So, hey! You didn't go to the crazy lady's office, did you? 'Cause I kinda snapped and was gonna go there and kick her butt when I found out she tried to kill Deadpool but Sam kinda didn't let me. Which is probably good, 'cause it was a really bad idea? But she's psycho."

"Yeah, um. Going there probably wasn't my best decision. I'm fine," she said quickly. "The teachers staged a coup this weekend. Principal Washburn's back in charge, and Umbridge is very gone."

"Did she hurt you?" Rikku asked quickly. "Did you go to the clinic? 'Cause I never go when I should but that's stupid. Oh! And Katara can heal people, if you need someone to. And ... whoa, seriously!? That's awesome. Are they okay? Can I kick her in the teeth? Oh, man."

"No, she didn't do anything to me," Hermione said. Just threatened to. But she was dealing with that, and she was okay, or getting there. "I just told Constable Fraser what happened. The radio said there were some injuries," she said, and wasn't sure whether 'and she temporarily killed Deadpool' was appropriate for the phone in the middle of her trip, "but everyone seems to be recovering."

"Oh, good." Rikku nodded, audibly relieved. "She was ... wow. I mean, I called her psycho just meaning, you know, she was mean and crazy, but she really was, wasn't she?"

She shuddered. "Sorry. This is a really cheerful topic, huh?"

"She was beyond sanity," she said, shaking her head. "But you should know, really. If it helps to lighten the mood, there's a small kitten trying very hard to make me bleed at the moment."

Rikku gasped, then clapped her hands eagerly. "You got a kitten? What's its name? Does he get along with Crookshanks??!"

"Well, he's actually a hat, and he'll be a hat again later," she said. "I was working on some Transfiguration and Crookshanks keeps hissing at him. He is very cute, though. With surprisingly sharp claws, ouch."

"You made a hat into a kitten?" Rikku shook her head. "Whoa. You know some weird spells. Uh, I mean that in a good way. Can't he stay as a kitten, if you really want him to?"

"He could, but it wouldn't be right. I mean, he's really a hat. I think that might be confusing for him. Crookshanks, stop. You're missing a lot here, Rikku, really."

Rikku laughed. "I can tell. And I'm gonna be nicer to hats, if they're also kittens. Or can be, or whatever. That's just crazy. Oh, hey, do you want anything from Toronto? It's a pretty neat place."

"You don't have to," Hermione told her, though she appreciated it. "But take pictures if you can. Oh! Unless you find, I don't know, a good Canadian history book, maybe? It's me."

"I'll totally take some pictures. Oh! Books! Yeah! I'll ask Jude what's good for Canadian history and all that." She considered. "Maybe Jen. But yeah. Totally. Am I gonna miss new students? We're getting back Friday, I think."

"I think they get in on Saturday, so you should be right on time," she said. "And I think the kitten needs to become a hat again and omg tired so I should probably go."

"New students are always a good time," Rikku grinned. "And yeah, I gotta go back before Jude's parents start wondering what happened to me. And can I see the kitten-hat trick some time?"
