Room 308, Thursday night

Hermione is working on letters again. She hasn't received any back yet, but she knows Harry can be a little lax on correspondence if it isn't pressing. There's no need to worry about breaking the time-space continuum with letters. Yet.

Crookshanks is somewhere. She's left the door open just enough that she could see if he left, but for the moment he's hiding.




Dear Ginny,

It has been an interesting week. The important news is that Willow and I did get into Special Collections in the library. It's a bit odd. For instance, the walls closed in, the floor fell out and a genie gave us manicures. Do not tell Ron that, I will never hear the end of it.

I don't know if Harry told you, but Cedric Diggory is going to school here, with no idea of what happened. Apprently this happens every now and then in Fandom. I stopped in to check on him and he offered to take off his shirt. Don't tell Ron that, either. Also the radio says he went on a date with someone named Jack. A boy. Did you know anything about this???

I've met a lot of interesting people here. A talking cat, for instance. He and Crookshanks seem to like each other enough. Bridge seems very nice, and Zack wanted to knoe the science behind the kind of magic we do, though I don't know how to answer that. One Peter is also from England and is very cute, and another was kind enough to warn me about some horrible things that happened in the pool.

I am also feeling extremely inadequate as I have not souled a vampire, do not speak more than a couple languages, never done plant or metal magic and can't do any magic with fire, not that I need to do any of this, but the problem is I can't and it is frustrating.

Apparently there is also a iant squid in the lake. I keep telling people it's not much different from Hogwarts...

Hermione is sealing the letter when she notices the owl pecking at the window, a scroll loosely tied around its neck. She opens the window and lets it hop onto the windowsill, taking the scroll and unrolling it.

She reads it quickly, not even suppressing the squeal. The first thing she does is remove her wand from its place in her desk drawer. Then she gives Ginny's letter to the owl, feeds it a piece of a cracker, and lets it on its way.

She can do magic again, though she does have restrictions. However, she has something that needs to be done. She thinks they'll understand.

Jamie just happens to be wandering outside of Hermione's room. As you do.

Hermione starts out of her room, a little startled at Jamie's presence. "Oh," she says. "Hello."

"Hi. Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you. I'm Jamie."

"Hermione," she introduces herself. "Are you one of the new students, too?"

"Yep. Nice to meet you," He said with a smile. "Where are you from? I mean exactly. I can tell you're from England and all."

She gives her location in a way that will not get the mun Jossed when book seven comes out knowing her luck. "Are you from around here?" she asks. She might hide her wand behind her back.

"New York City by way of Kansas and Scotland," Jamie said with a nod. "But my reality is a lot different from most peoples. What about yours?"

"Wizarding school in 1995," she admits. "I haven't noticed much of a difference so far."

"Wizarding school?" Jamie said impressed. "See? That's totally different from my reality. Or at least I don't think we have any wizarding schools. Wizards? Yes. Schools? Not so sure."

She frowns. "Then how do they learn?"

"I'm not sure. The only witch I knew was actually a mutant," Jamie said scratching his head. "Even then I'm not sure how many people practice magic. Is it pretty common where you're from?"

"Not really. There are witches and wizards everywhere, but they're not really seen. My school wasn't really very large."

She pauses. "Mutant?"

Jamie nodded. "Yeah we have certain powers that have evolved due to evolution, blah, blah, blah. It's pretty technical."

"You're a mutant?" she says. "What can you do?"

"Duplicate myself," Jamie said demonstrating by knocking once on the wall and having a double appear. "Though other people can fly, read minds, shoot laser beams from eyes. That kind of thing."

"The showing off part to cute girls has nothing to do with his power," his double piped up.

"Hush," Jamie scowled and quickly absorbed him. "I can take them back too.

Hermione stares, and wishes she could add a line into her letter to Ginny. "That's incredible."

Jamie shrugs. "It's a thing that I can do. I imagine you can do some pretty cool things too coming from a wizardry school."

Which she's really supposed to be doing, actually. "Just some things," she says with a little shrug. "I hate to be rude, but I need to be somewhere right now. I'll see you later?"

"You, too," she says, and trying to keep her wand hidden, heads off to find the pool.

Elizabeth is bored, and wandering the dorms aimlessly seems like a good idea.

And why not wander the third floor?
